About Therapy

Richmond, Virginia Psychotherapy Practice

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and many people have questions before scheduling their first appointment. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about therapy, trauma treatment, anxiety, and couples counseling.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED THERAPY?

People seek therapy for many reasons, including anxiety, stress, relationship challenges, trauma, grief, or major life transitions. You don’t need a diagnosis to benefit from therapy—many people start therapy simply because they want support, clarity, or personal growth. If emotional distress is affecting your relationships, work, sleep, or daily functioning, therapy can provide tools and support to help you navigate these challenges.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FIRST THERAPY SESSION?

The first therapy session typically focuses on getting to know you and understanding what brought you to therapy. We focus on your current concerns, personal history, relationships, and goals for therapy.

Most therapy sessions last just under an hour (53-55 minutes), and the first session is often an opportunity to determine whether the therapist feels like a good fit for you.

HOW LONG DOES THERAPY USUALLY TAKE?

There is no universal timeline for therapy. Some people feel improvement after a few sessions, while others continue therapy for several months or longer depending on their goals and the challenges they are working through. Therapy is a collaborative process, and the length of treatment can evolve over time.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I ATTEND THERAPY?

Weekly therapy sessions are common when beginning treatment, but some clients attend bi-weekly or monthly sessions depending on their needs. We will work together to determine a schedule that supports your goals and progress.

WHAT IF I'M NERVOUS ABOUT STARTING THERAPY?

Feeling nervous before your first therapy session is very common. Many people worry about what to say or whether they will be judged. Therapy is designed to be a confidential and supportive space, and you are always free to move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

WHAT ARE COMMON TRAUMA SYMPTOMS IN ADULTS?

Trauma can influence how the nervous system responds to stress and emotional situation, and often affects people in different ways. Some common trauma symptoms include:

  • anxiety or hypervigilance

  • emotional numbness

  • intrusive memories or flashbacks

  • difficulty trusting others

  • relationship difficulties

CAN TRAUMA SYMPTOMS APPEAR YEARS LATER?

Absolutely, and they often do. Trauma responses sometimes emerge long after the original experience. Stressful life events, relationship challenges, or major transitions can trigger unresolved trauma responses. Trauma-focused therapy can help individuals process these experiences and develop coping strategies.

HOW CAN THERAPY HELP TRAUMA RECOVERY?

Many people find that trauma therapy helps them feel more emotionally stable and connected. Trauma therapy focuses on many things since experience varies. However, common themes often include:

  • understanding trauma responses

  • regulating the nervous system

  • processing traumatic experiences

  • rebuilding emotional safety in relationships

WHAT ARE SIGNS OF HIGH-FUNCTIONING ANXIETY?

Even when someone appears successful or productive, they may still experience significant internal stress. High-functioning anxiety often includes:

  • chronic overthinking

  • difficulty relaxing

  • perfectionism

  • feeling constantly “on edge”

  • difficulty sleeping

WHY DO I OVERTHINK EVERYTHING?

Overthinking is often connected to anxiety and the brain’s attempt to anticipate potential problems or threats.

Therapy can help people learn strategies to interrupt worry cycles and develop healthier thought patterns.

WHY DO I FEEL ANXIOUS FOR 'NO REASON'?

Anxiety does not always have a clear cause on the surface, but there is usually a reason. You just have to find it.  Stress, trauma history, life transitions, or chronic worry patterns can contribute to persistent anxiety. The good news is that you don't have to wait to find it before beginning to feel relief. Therapy can help identify underlying patterns and develop effective coping strategies while exploring the cause.
